Read -- Numbers 11:1-15
We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost--also cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic."
Is it a sin to think your pastor has lost his mind or has a vivid imagination? One Sunday my pastor said, "The children of Israel were supposed to be married to God; however, they were willing to sell God out for a watermelon. They were willing to sell God out for some onions. They wanted to go back to Egypt."Watermelon and onions? In the Bible? I was convinced my pastor was embellishing the story since we were studying the fourth chapter of first Thessalonians and he did not mention another scripture reference. During the week, I was studying for my Old Testament Bible college class when I started laughing. There it was--God had revealed Numbers 11:5 to me. "We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost--also cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic." I now knew my pastor had not lost his mind. I also realized our God is one who pays attention to details and has a sense of humor.
Moses was faced with a grumbling and angry people. The children of Israel had "bread from heaven" to eat, yet they were longing for watermelon and onions; things of the past. How often do we find ourselves living and longing for the "good old days" of the past? Have we, like the children of Israel, become a people who find ourselves grumbling and complaining about what we do not have?
May we be reminded of God's own words as recorded in Exodus 20:2 and Deuteronomy 5:6. "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery." I pray we would become a thankful people who recognize God's hand of blessing at work in our lives.
